Liberal Party political powerhouse Hedy Fry is the longest serving Member of Parliament in the Canadian federal government, having won seven consecutive elections in my riding of Vancouver-Centre, from 1993 until the present. People familiar with Canadian politics won’t be shocked to hear that I lean more NDP than Liberal, but when it comes to Hedy Fry, I’m thrilled that she’s my representative in parliament.

Born in Trinidad and Tobago, Fry studied French, Spanish, and English literature and was her class Valedictorian. She was offered a full scholarship to earn a Masters degree in English literature at Oxford University, but she declined that offer and instead chose to study medicine and become a doctor.

Fry emigrated to Canada in 1970 and practiced family medicine at St. Paul’s hospital — where I do my community gardening on the rooftop. She quickly rose in profile to become president of the Vancouver Medical Association, the BC Medical Association, and the Federation of Medical Women. She won her seat in parliament in 1993 and has never relinquished it, serving as Secretary of State for Multiculturalism, Minister for the Status of Women, and representing Canada at the World Conference Against Racism in Durban (which the US boycotted).

Most recently, Hedy Fry has proposed amending the Canadian Criminal Code to include Cyberbullying. In the parliamentary clip above, she rails against the Conservative government’s attempts to erode universal access to healthcare.
